AI aids Wildlife on the Railway Tracks

Railroad crossing accidents occur almost every day and with the size of trains and force, accidents are usually catastrophic causing millions of dollars in damages resulting in human, even wildlife casualties.

In rural areas, animals cross railroads all the time to get to the other side. In fact, most wildlife-train collisions go unnoticed, their fatalities left uncounted. To rectify this problem, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, they use an edge AI railway intrusion detection system to prevent elephant deaths on railway tracks by notifying nearby trains ahead of time.

How does edge AI railways intrusion detection system work?
By installing an edge AI railway intrusion detection system at railside connected with cameras and sensors, the system can detect when there are animals (objects) on the track. The railside system sends an alert to nearby inbound trains and the railway administration to prevent accidents.

However, deploying the edge AI railway intrusion detection systems on the side of a railway track is always challenging, especially for the computer. First, the weather in the open field will affect electronic operations. Though the computer will be placed within a cabinet along with other electronic devices, being under the sun will dramatically soak up more heat than usual. Expect temperatures to reach 50°C+, and depending on the location, in some rural areas, temperatures may drop to just below zero, -2°C or -3°C, once the sun goes down.

Railside computer must survive and operate in extreme conditions under the weather. At the same time, the computer must house processing power for 3D imaging and AI analytics, imposing greater challenges for computer manufacturers in tackling heat dissipation and other reliability issues.

Neousys GPU computers is available with up to IP69K-rated; in addition, users may choose powerful dual NVIDIA® 350W GPU platforms for the ultimate AI machine vision. With patented thermal solution and damping bracket technology, Neousys systems can withstand up to 3Grms shock and vibration, making them ideal for critical operations.

We are in the midst of the most explosive road expansion era in human history. With global railway networks spanning over 1.3 million route-kilometers, efforts are being made to prevent wildlife-train collisions with edge AI technology.
